In fact, Guangdong acts as the major region for toys, followed by other main regions like Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Shandong and Fujian. In the year of 2006, national toy export amounted to 17.76 billion US dollar, while Guangdong recorded 14.06 billion, making up 79 percent of the whole. In the same year, Zhejiang and Jiangsu achieved respective export of 1.05 billion and 950 million US dollar, accounting for 6% and 5% of the national shares respectively. China currently boasts developed productive condition for toys, coming with complete supply chain in main production area.
A majority of Guangdong’s products are electrical and electronic toys, plastic toys, dolls, Christmas goods, game consoles and ride-ons. Zhejiang is famous for its wooden playthings and Christmas stuff, while Jiangsu and Shandong see advantages in plush toys. Export accounts for a major part in China’s toy business, while domestic sales makes up around 15 percent.
Many outstanding toy makers have welled up in China, who attach great importance to product development, technical innovation and brand origination. At the same time, they put stress on both export and domestic sales.
Guangdong’s Toy Industry
As the largest base for global toy business, Guangdong currently sees over 5,000 makers, coming with 1.5 million employees. As a major supplier of global toys, Guangdong distributes its products to 186 countries and regions in the world. In 2006, Guangdong’s toy export recorded 14.06 billion US dollar, making up 79 percent of national export of toys. The same year saw 121.96 billion RMB yuan on Guangdong’s gross sales of toys, among with domestic sales accounted for 15 percent. In fact, over 75 percent of domestically sold toys in China are made in Guangdong.
Various factors such as upvaluation of RMB, difficulties in recruiting workers, price-rising and EU’s “green barrier” have seriously squeezed Guangdong’s toy industry’s profit margin, urging toy makers to cement competitive edge through technical innovation, product innovation and brand origination.
To help companies expand market, Guangdong Toy Association and Guangdong Research Council of Toy Cultural & Economic Development held the “Guangzhou Int’l Toys & Gifts Fair” in each April. With a long history and large scale, the fair, which is situated in production base, attracts a great deal of Chinese and overseas buyers to make their purchasing.
